Linux Kernel up to 4.13.4 Keyring credentials management

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Applying a patch is the recommended action to fix this issue.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Linux Kernel up to 4.13.4 (Operating System). This affects an unknown part of the component Keyring Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a credentials management vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-255. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel before 4.13.5, a local user could create keyrings for other users via keyctl commands, setting unwanted defaults or causing a denial of service.

The bug was discovered 09/25/2017. The weakness was released 05/18/2018 as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2017-18270 since 05/18/2018. An attack has to be approached locally. A authentication is necessary for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1552 for this issue.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 214 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 109380 (CentOS 7 : kernel (CESA-2018:1062)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 351447 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for kernel: ALAC2012-2018-013).

Upgrading to version 4.13.5 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (109380) and SecurityFocus (BID 104254†). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at VDB-106966, VDB-110109, VDB-110311 and VDB-111673.
