Details
A vulnerability was found in ISC BIND up to 9.9.4 (Domain Name Software) and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is the function query_findclosestnsec3 of the file bin/named/query.c of the component DNS Query Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability (NSEC3-Signed Zones). Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:
The query_findclosestnsec3 function in query.c in named in ISC BIND 9.6, 9.7, and 9.8 before 9.8.6-P2 and 9.9 before 9.9.4-P2, and 9.6-ESV before 9.6-ESV-R10-P2, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (INSIST assertion failure and daemon exit) via a crafted DNS query to an authoritative nameserver that uses the NSEC3 signing feature.
The weakness was shared 01/10/2014 by Jared Mauch as AA-01078 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at kb.isc.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2014-0591 since 12/27/2013. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The advisory points out:
Because of a defect in handling queries for NSEC3-signed zones, BIND can crash with an "INSIST" failure (…)
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 72018 (Mandriva Linux Security Advisory : bind (MDVSA-2014:002)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Mandriva Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350814 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for bind: AL2012-2015-017).
Upgrading to version 9.6-ESV-R10-P2, 9.8.6-P2 or 9.9.4-P2 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 3 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 13705.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (90262), Tenable (72018), SecurityFocus (BID 64801†), OSVDB (101973†) and Secunia (SA56425†). bugzilla.redhat.com is providing further details. The entries VDB-6634, VDB-7079, VDB-7502 and VDB-8108 are related to this item. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
