ISC BIND up to 9.9.3 on Unix/Linux Regular Expression memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in ISC BIND on Unix/Linux (Domain Name Software). It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is some unknown functionality of the component Regular Expression Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:

libdns in ISC BIND 9.7.x and 9.8.x before 9.8.4-P2, 9.8.5 before 9.8.5b2, 9.9.x before 9.9.2-P2, and 9.9.3 before 9.9.3b2 on UNIX platforms allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (memory consumption) via a crafted regular expression, as demonstrated by a memory-exhaustion attack against a machine running a named process.

The weakness was presented 03/26/2013 by Matthew Horsfall with Dyn, Inc. as File 120975/BIN as confirmed advisory (Packetstorm). The advisory is shared for download at packetstormsecurity.com. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2013-2266 since 02/21/2013. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 68799 (Oracle Linux 6 : bind (ELSA-2013-0689)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350814 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for bind: AL2012-2015-017).

Upgrading to version 9.9.2-P2 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12903.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (68799), SecurityFocus (BID 58736†), OSVDB (91712†), Secunia (SA52782†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1028362†). See VDB-6634, VDB-7079, VDB-7502 and VDB-9764 for similar entries. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
