Details
A vulnerability was found in ISC BIND (Domain Name Software). It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is some unknown processing of the file rdata.c of the component RDATA Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-404. The product does not release or incorrectly releases a resource before it is made available for re-use. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:
The RFC 5011 implementation in rdata.c in ISC BIND 9.7.x and 9.8.x before 9.8.5-P2, 9.8.6b1, 9.9.x before 9.9.3-P2, and 9.9.4b1, and DNSco BIND 9.9.3-S1 before 9.9.3-S1-P1 and 9.9.4-S1b1, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (assertion failure and named daemon exit) via a query with a malformed RDATA section that is not properly handled during construction of a log message, as exploited in the wild in July 2013.
The weakness was shared 07/26/2013 by Maxim Shudrak as FreeBSD-SA-13:07.bind.asc as not defined advisory (Website) via ZDI (Zero Day Initiative). The advisory is shared for download at freebsd.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2013-4854 since 07/16/2013. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.
After immediately, there has been an exploit disclosed. It is declared as attacked. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 69224 (Slackware 12.1 / 12.2 / 13.0 / 13.1 / 13.37 / 14.0 / current : bind (SSA:2013-218-01)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Slackware Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350814 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for bind: AL2012-2015-017).
Upgrading to version 9.8.5-P2 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 13117.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (86004), Zero-Day.cz (249), Tenable (69224), SecurityFocus (BID 61479†) and OSVDB (95707†). The entries VDB-6634, VDB-7079, VDB-7502 and VDB-8108 are related to this item. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
