A vulnerability was found in Apache OpenOffice (Office Suite Software). It has been declared as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code block of the component XML Handler. Apache OpenOffice.org (OOo) before 4.0 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (memory corruption) or possibly have unspecified other impact via a crafted element in an OOXML document file.
The weakness was presented 07/26/2013 by Jeremy Brown with Microsoft Vulnerability Research as CVE-2013-4156 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at openoffice.org. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with Apache. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2013-4156 since 06/12/2013. Attacking locally is a requirement. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 73334 (LibreOffice < 3.6.7 / 4.0.4 / 4.1.0 .docm Import DoS), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 167161 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for LibreOffice (SUSE-SU-2014:1116-1)).
Upgrading to version 4.0 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
