VMware Workstation/Fusion RPC null pointer dereference

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in VMware Workstation and Fusion (Virtualization Software) (affected version unknown) and classified as problematic. Affected by this issue is an unknown functionality of the component RPC Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:

VMware Workstation (14.x before 14.1.2) and Fusion (10.x before 10.1.2) contain multiple denial-of-service vulnerabilities that occur due to NULL pointer dereference issues in the RPC handler. Successful exploitation of these issues may allow an attacker with limited privileges on the guest machine trigger a denial-of-Service of their guest machine.

The bug was discovered 05/21/2018. The weakness was disclosed 05/22/2018 with Zero Day Initiative (Website). The advisory is shared for download at vmware.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2018-6963 since 02/14/2018. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally.
