VMware Workstation/Fusion/ESXi RPC null pointer dereference

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in VMware Workstation, Fusion and ESXi (Virtualization Software) (affected version unknown). It has been classified as problematic. Affected is an unknown functionality of the component RPC Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:

VMware ESXi (6.7 before ESXi670-201806401-BG, 6.5 before ESXi650-201806401-BG, 6.0 before ESXi600-201806401-BG and 5.5 before ESXi550-201806401-BG), Workstation (14.x before 14.1.2), and Fusion (10.x before 10.1.2) contain a denial-of-service vulnerability due to NULL pointer dereference issue in RPC handler. Successful exploitation of this issue may allow attackers with normal user privileges to crash their VMs.

The bug was discovered 07/19/2018. The weakness was disclosed 07/25/2018 with Zero Day Initiative (Website). The advisory is shared for download at vmware.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2018-6972 since 02/13/2018. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The successful exploitation needs a authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 111350 (VMSA-2018-0018 : VMware Horizon View Agent, VMware ESXi, Workstation, and Fusion updates resolve multiple security issues), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family VMware ESX Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 370967 (VMware Workstation 14.x, Fusion 10.x Multiple Vulnerabilities (VMSA-2018-0013,VMSA-2018-0016)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (111350) and SecurityFocus (BID 104884†). The entries VDB-118111, VDB-118112 and VDB-122169 are pretty similar. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
