The TLS implementation in Mozilla Network Security Services (NSS) does not properly consider timing side-channel attacks on a noncompliant MAC check operation during the processing of malformed CBC padding, which allows remote attackers to conduct distinguishing attacks and plaintext-recovery attacks via statistical analysis of timing data for crafted packets, a related issue to CVE-2013-0169.
The weakness was disclosed 01/14/2014 with Oracle as Oracle Critical Patch Update Advisory - January 2014 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at oracle.com. This vulnerability can be exploited via HTTPS. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2013-1620 since 02/05/2013. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 71578 (Amazon Linux AMI : nspr (ALAS-2013-266)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Amazon Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350479 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for nss: ALAS-2013-265).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
