Details
A vulnerability was found in Bouncy Castle JCE Provider up to 1.55 and classified as critical. This issue affects an unknown code block of the component ECDSA. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a signature verification vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-347. The product does not verify, or incorrectly verifies, the cryptographic signature for data. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
In the Bouncy Castle JCE Provider version 1.55 and earlier ECDSA does not fully validate ASN.1 encoding of signature on verification. It is possible to inject extra elements in the sequence making up the signature and still have it validate, which in some cases may allow the introduction of 'invisible' data into a signed structure.
The bug was discovered 07/07/2018. The weakness was presented 06/04/2018 (GitHub Repository). It is possible to read the advisory at github.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2016-1000342 since 06/04/2018. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
