A vulnerability has been found in Mozilla Firefox ESR and Thunderbird up to 52.7 (Mail Client Software) and classified as problematic. This vulnerability affects an unknown code block of the component Lightweight Theme. The manipulation as part of a Message Header leads to a input validation vulnerability. Crafted message headers can cause a Thunderbird process to hang on receiving the message. This vulnerability affects Thunderbird ESR < 52.8 and Thunderbird < 52.8.
The bug was discovered 05/18/2018. The weakness was disclosed 06/11/2018 by Ronald Crane (Alex) with Dell as Bug 1411720 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is available at bugzilla.mozilla.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2018-5161 since 01/03/2018. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 7 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k.
