Crafted message headers can cause a Thunderbird process to hang on receiving the message. This vulnerability affects Thunderbird ESR < 52.8 and Thunderbird < 52.8.

The bug was discovered 05/18/2018. The weakness was disclosed 06/11/2018 by Ronald Crane (Alex) with Dell as Bug 1411720 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is available at bugzilla.mozilla.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2018-5161 since 01/03/2018. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.
