A vulnerability was found in Mozilla Thunderbird and Thunderbird ESR up to 52.7 (Mail Client Software) and classified as problematic. Plaintext of decrypted emails can leak through the src attribute of remote images, or links. This vulnerability affects Thunderbird ESR < 52.8 and Thunderbird < 52.8.
The bug was discovered 05/18/2018. The weakness was presented 06/11/2018 by Damian Poddebniak (Basti) as Bug 1457721 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). It is possible to read the advisory at bugzilla.mozilla.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2018-5162 since 01/03/2018. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1592 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 7 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k.
