It is possible to spoof the filename of an attachment and display an arbitrary attachment name. This could lead to a user opening a remote attachment which is a different file type than expected. This vulnerability affects Thunderbird ESR < 52.8 and Thunderbird < 52.8.

The bug was discovered 05/18/2018. The weakness was shared 06/11/2018 by Ronald Crane (Alex) with Dell as Bug 1411732 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared for download at bugzilla.mozilla.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2018-5170 since 01/03/2018. It is possible to launch the attack remotely.
