A vulnerability was found in Mozilla Thunderbird and Thunderbird ESR up to 52.7 (Mail Client Software). It has been classified as critical. It is possible to spoof the filename of an attachment and display an arbitrary attachment name. This could lead to a user opening a remote attachment which is a different file type than expected. This vulnerability affects Thunderbird ESR < 52.8 and Thunderbird < 52.8.
The bug was discovered 05/18/2018. The weakness was shared 06/11/2018 by Ronald Crane (Alex) with Dell as Bug 1411732 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared for download at bugzilla.mozilla.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2018-5170 since 01/03/2018. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 7 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k.
