Details
A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Linux Kernel up to 4.17.1 (Operating System). This vulnerability affects the function ea_get of the file fs/jfs/xattr.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
In the ea_get function in fs/jfs/xattr.c in the Linux kernel through 4.17.1, a memory corruption bug in JFS can be triggered by calling setxattr twice with two different extended attribute names on the same file. This vulnerability can be triggered by an unprivileged user with the ability to create files and execute programs. A kmalloc call is incorrect, leading to slab-out-of-bounds in jfs_xattr.
The bug was discovered 06/01/2018. The weakness was released 06/12/2018 (Website). The advisory is available at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2018-12233 since 06/12/2018. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 11 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 111165 (Debian DLA-1423-1 : linux-4.9 new package (Spectre)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 171225 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for the Linux Kernel (SUSE-SU-2018:1772-1)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
