Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Linux Kernel up to 4.4.132/4.9.101/4.14.42/4.16.10 (Operating System). This issue affects an unknown part of the component USB over IP. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:
In the Linux Kernel before version 4.16.11, 4.14.43, 4.9.102, and 4.4.133, multiple race condition errors when handling probe, disconnect, and rebind operations can be exploited to trigger a use-after-free condition or a NULL pointer dereference by sending multiple USB over IP packets.
The bug was discovered 06/07/2018. The weakness was presented 06/12/2018 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at secuniaresearch.flexerasoftware.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2018-5814 since 01/19/2018. Attacking locally is a requirement. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 5 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 111165 (Debian DLA-1423-1 : linux-4.9 new package (Spectre)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 172309 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for the Linux Kernel (SUSE-SU-2019:1245-1)).
Upgrading to version 4.4.133, 4.9.102, 4.14.43 or 4.16.11 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
