Details
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Redis up to 3.2.11/4.0.9/5.0 RC1. Affected is an unknown code block of the component Lua Subsystem. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Memory Corruption was discovered in the cmsgpack library in the Lua subsystem in Redis before 3.2.12, 4.x before 4.0.10, and 5.x before 5.0 RC2 because of stack-based buffer overflows.
The bug was discovered 06/14/2018. The weakness was presented 06/17/2018 by Security Team with Apple (Website). The advisory is shared for download at antirez.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2018-11218 since 05/16/2018. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 3 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 110678 (openSUSE Security Update : redis (openSUSE-2018-667)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 237091 (Red Hat Update for redis (RHSA-2019:0052)).
Upgrading to version 3.2.12, 4.0.10 or 5.0 RC2 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 5 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (110678) and SecurityFocus (BID 104553†). See VDB-119623, VDB-119629 and VDB-133492 for similar entries. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
