The ssl_Do1stHandshake function in sslsecur.c in libssl in Mozilla Network Security Services (NSS) before 3.15.4, when the TLS False Start feature is enabled, allows man-in-the-middle attackers to spoof SSL servers by using an arbitrary X.509 certificate during certain handshake traffic.

The weakness was disclosed 01/09/2014 as When false start is enabled, libssl will sometimes return unencrypted, unauthenticated data from PR_Recv as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at bugzilla.mozilla.org. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability was named CVE-2013-1740 since 02/13/2013. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1600.
