Libreswan up to 3.7 IKEv2 Payload null pointer dereference

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Libreswan up to 3.7 and classified as critical. This issue affects some unknown functionality of the component IKEv2 Payload Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

Libreswan 3.7 and earlier allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference and IKE daemon restart) via IKEv2 packets that lack expected payloads.

The weakness was presented 01/15/2014 by Iustina Melinte as Libreswan dereferencing missing IKEv2 payloads causes restart as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at libreswan.org. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with the project team. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-6467 since 11/04/2013. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 323228 (NewStart CGSL MAIN 6.06 : libreswan Multiple Vulnerabilities (NS-SA-2025-0243)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 3.8 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at libreswan.org. Applying the patch CVE-2013-6467.patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at libreswan.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (90522), Tenable (323228), SecurityFocus (BID 64987†), OSVDB (102172†) and Secunia (SA56420†). Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
