A vulnerability has been found in Microsoft Internet Explorer up to 6 (Web Browser) and classified as problematic. The weakness was released 02/08/2005 by Andreas Sandblad (http-equiv) with Secunia Research as MS05-014 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared at microsoft.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2005-0053 since 01/11/2005. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 16324 (MS05-008: Vulnerability in Windows Shell (890047)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100024 (Microsoft Internet Explorer Cumulative Update (MS05-014)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch MS05-014 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at update.microsoft.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
