A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Internet Explorer up to 6 (Web Browser) and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is an unknown code block of the component Temporary Internet Files Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a remote code execution vulnerability. Internet Explorer 5.01, 5.5, and 6 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via drag and drop events, aka the "Drag-and-Drop Vulnerability."
The weakness was disclosed 02/08/2005 by Andreas Sandblad (http-equiv) with Secunia Research und Microsoft as MS05-014 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is available at microsoft.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2005-0053. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 16324 (MS05-008: Vulnerability in Windows Shell (890047)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch MS05-014 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at update.microsoft.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 2950.
