GIGABYTE BRIX UEFI firmware does not cryptographically validate images prior to updating the system firmware. Additionally, the firmware updates are served over HTTP. An attacker can make arbitrary modifications to firmware images without being detected.

The bug was discovered 03/31/2017. The weakness was published 07/09/2018 by Alex Matrosov with Cylance as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is available at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2017-3198 since 12/05/2016. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.
