A vulnerability was found in QEMU (Virtualization Software) (version unknown) and classified as critical. This issue affects the function 9pfs_list_xattr of the component VirtFS. Quick Emulator (Qemu) built with the VirtFS, host directory sharing via Plan 9 File System (9pfs) support, is vulnerable to an improper access control issue. It could occur while accessing files on a shared host directory. A privileged user inside guest could use this flaw to access host file system beyond the shared folder and potentially escalating their privileges on a host.
The bug was discovered 07/18/2018. The weakness was released 07/09/2018 by Prasad J Pandit (oss-sec). It is possible to read the advisory at openwall.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2017-7471 since 04/05/2017. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. The successful exploitation requires a simple authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1068 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
