A vulnerability was found in QEMU (Virtualization Software) (affected version not known). It has been declared as problematic. The (1) v9fs_create and (2) v9fs_lcreate functions in hw/9pfs/9p.c in QEMU (aka Quick Emulator) allow local guest OS privileged users to cause a denial of service (file descriptor or memory consumption) via vectors related to an already in-use fid.
The bug was discovered 03/28/2017. The weakness was released 04/10/2017 by Li Qiang with 360.cn Inc. (oss-sec). The advisory is shared for download at openwall.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2017-7377 since 03/31/2017. The attack needs to be approached locally. A single authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 13 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 99405 (Fedora 24 : xen (2017-03dc811be6)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 170142 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for qemu (SUSE-SU-2017:1774-1)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.qemu-project.org. A possible mitigation has been published 4 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
