A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in MediaWiki (Content Management System). This issue affects an unknown functionality of the file thumb.php. The manipulation of the argument page with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
MediaWiki 1.22.x before 1.22.2, 1.21.x before 1.21.5 and 1.19.x before 1.19.11, when DjVu or PDF file upload support is enabled, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary commands via shell metacharacters in (1) the page parameter to includes/media/DjVu.php; (2) the w parameter (aka width field) to thumb.php, which is not properly handled by includes/media/PdfHandler_body.php; and possibly unspecified vectors in (3) includes/media/Bitmap.php and (4) includes/media/ImageHandler.php.
The weakness was published 01/28/2014 by Netanel Rubin with Check Point Software Technologies as MediaWiki Security Releases: 1.22.2, 1.21.5 and 1.19.11 as confirmed posting (Mailing List). The advisory is shared at lists.wikimedia.org. The public release has been coordinated with the project team. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2014-1610 since 01/19/2014. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.
A public exploit has been developed by Netanel Rubin and been published immediately after the advisory. The exploit is available at bugzilla.wikimedia.org. It is declared as highly functional. By approaching the search of inurl:thumb.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 72618 (MediaWiki thumb.php 'w' Parameter Remote Shell Command Injection), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 12832 (MediaWiki DjVu and PDF File Upload Remote Code Execution Vulnerability).
Upgrading to version 1.19.11, 1.21.5 or 1.22.2 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at bugzilla.wikimedia.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
