A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in MediaWiki (Content Management System). Affected is some unknown functionality of the file pdfhandler_body.php. MediaWiki 1.22.x before 1.22.2, 1.21.x before 1.21.5 and 1.19.x before 1.19.11, when DjVu or PDF file upload support is enabled, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary commands via shell metacharacters in (1) the page parameter to includes/media/DjVu.php; (2) the w parameter (aka width field) to thumb.php, which is not properly handled by includes/media/PdfHandler_body.php; and possibly unspecified vectors in (3) includes/media/Bitmap.php and (4) includes/media/ImageHandler.php.

The weakness was released 01/28/2014 by Netanel Rubin as MediaWiki Security Releases: 1.22.2, 1.21.5 and 1.19.11 as confirmed posting (Mailing List). The advisory is available at lists.wikimedia.org. The public release was coordinated with the vendor. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2014-1610 since 01/19/2014. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. A public exploit has been developed by @u0x in Ruby and been published 4 days after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as highly functional. By approaching the search of inurl:pdfhandler_body.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 72618 (MediaWiki thumb.php 'w' Parameter Remote Shell Command Injection), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 12832 (MediaWiki DjVu and PDF File Upload Remote Code Execution Vulnerability).

Upgrading to version 1.19.11, 1.21.5 or 1.22.2 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at bugzilla.wikimedia.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 23869.
