Use-after-free vulnerability in the imgRequestProxy function in Mozilla Firefox before 27.0, Firefox ESR 24.x before 24.3, Thunderbird before 24.3, and SeaMonkey before 2.24 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via vectors involving unspecified Content-Type values for image data.
The weakness was disclosed 02/04/2014 by Arthur Gerkis as MFSA2014-08 as confirmed advisory (Website) via Zero Day Initiative (ZDI). The advisory is shared at mozilla.org. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with Mozilla. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2014-1486 since 01/16/2014. The exploitability is told to be difficult. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 72350 (CentOS 5 / 6 : firefox (CESA-2014:0132)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 121775 (Red Hat Update for Xulrunner Firefox (RHSA-2014:0132)).
Upgrading to version 27 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
