Mozilla Firefox before 27.0 does not properly restrict access to about:home buttons by script on other pages, which allows user-assisted remote attackers to cause a denial of service (session restore) via a crafted web site.
The weakness was shared 02/04/2014 by Yazan Tommalieh as MFSA2014-10 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at mozilla.org. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2014-1489 since 01/16/2014. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1068 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 72312 (FreeBSD : mozilla -- multiple vulnerabilities (1753f0ff-8dd5-11e3-9b45-b4b52fce4ce8)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 195432 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Firefox Regression (USN-2102-2)).
Upgrading to version 27 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
