Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in QEMU KVM up to 5.5-2.2 (Virtualization Software). Affected is an unknown functionality in the library libspice. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
libspice, as used in QEMU-KVM in Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization Hypervisor (aka RHEV-H or rhev-hypervisor) before 5.5-2.2 and possibly other products, allows guest OS users to read from or write to arbitrary QEMU memory by modifying the address that is used by Cairo for memory mappings.
The weakness was released 03/26/2013 by Izik Eidus as Bug 568702: Insufficient guest provided memory mappings boundaries validations. as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at rhn.redhat.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2010-0430 since 01/27/2010. The attack can only be done within the local network. The successful exploitation needs a authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 79275 (RHEL 5 : rhev-hypervisor (RHSA-2010:0476)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Red Hat Local Security Checks and running in the context l.
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability. The advisory contains the following remark:
The CVE-2010-0430 issue was fixed in the kvm packages for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 via RHSA-2010:0271, and fixed in the rhev-hypervisor package via RHSA-2010:0476. This CVE was not disclosed at the time the errata were released; therefore, it was not mentioned in them.
