Linux Kernel up to 3.12.4 net/ipx/af_ipx.c ipx_recvmsg input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability identified as problematic has been detected in Linux Kernel up to 3.12.4. The impacted element is the function ipx_recvmsg of the file net/ipx/af_ipx.c. This manipulation causes input validation. This vulnerability is tracked as CVE-2013-7268. No exploit exists. It is suggested to install a patch to address this issue.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Linux Kernel up to 3.12.4 (Operating System) and classified as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is the function ipx_recvmsg of the file net/ipx/af_ipx.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:

The ipx_recvmsg function in net/ipx/af_ipx.c in the Linux kernel before 3.12.4 updates a certain length value without ensuring that an associated data structure has been initialized, which allows local users to obtain sensitive information from kernel memory via a (1) recvfrom, (2) recvmmsg, or (3) recvmsg system call.

The weakness was disclosed 01/07/2014 by Hannes Frederic Sowa (oss-sec). The advisory is shared at openwall.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2013-7268 since 01/05/2014. The exploitation appears to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 71936 (Mandriva Linux Security Advisory : kernel (MDVSA-2014:001)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Mandriva Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 195763 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Linux Vulnerabilities (USN-2109-1)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (90129), Tenable (71936), SecurityFocus (BID 64741†), Secunia (SA55882†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-43300†). The entries VDB-11507, VDB-11712, VDB-11755 and VDB-11756 are pretty similar. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
