A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel 3.12.5 (Operating System) and classified as critical. This issue affects the function kvm_vm_ioctl_create_vcpu of the file kvm/kvm_main.c of the component Bounds-Check Handler. Array index error in the kvm_vm_ioctl_create_vcpu function in virt/kvm/kvm_main.c in the KVM subsystem in the Linux kernel through 3.12.5 allows local users to gain privileges via a large id value.
The weakness was disclosed 12/12/2013 by Andrew Honig as CVE-2013-4587 as not defined alert (NVD). It is possible to read the advisory at web.nvd.nist.gov. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-4587 since 06/12/2013. Attacking locally is a requirement. Required for exploitation is a simple authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 71593 (Fedora 20 : kernel-3.12.5-302.fc20 (2013-23445)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 195763 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Linux Vulnerabilities (USN-2109-1)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at github.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
