Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel (Operating System) (the affected version is unknown). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects the function xfs_attrlist_by_handle of the file xfs_ioctl.c/xfs_ioctl32.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Multiple buffer underflows in the XFS implementation in the Linux kernel through 3.12.1 allow local users to cause a denial of service (memory corruption) or possibly have unspecified other impact by leveraging the CAP_SYS_ADMIN capability for a (1) XFS_IOC_ATTRLIST_BY_HANDLE or (2) XFS_IOC_ATTRLIST_BY_HANDLE_32 ioctl call with a crafted length value, related to the xfs_attrlist_by_handle function in fs/xfs/xfs_ioctl.c and the xfs_compat_attrlist_by_handle function in fs/xfs/xfs_ioctl32.c.
The weakness was disclosed 11/05/2013 as msg100319 as confirmed bulletin (Website). The advisory is available at spinics.net. This vulnerability was named CVE-2013-6382 since 11/04/2013. The exploitation appears to be difficult. Local access is required to approach this attack. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 71398 (Amazon Linux AMI : kernel (ALAS-2013-258)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Amazon Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 167228 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for Linux Kernel (SUSE-SU-2014:0807-1)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (71398), SecurityFocus (BID 63889†), OSVDB (100241†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-42368†). The entries VDB-11507, VDB-11755, VDB-12214 and VDB-12411 are pretty similar. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
