Details
A vulnerability was found in adm-zip npm Library up to 0.4.8 (Software Library). It has been classified as problematic. This affects an unknown part of the component Extraction. The manipulation with the input value ../ leads to a path traversal vulnerability (Zip-Slip). CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. This is going to have an impact on integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
adm-zip npm library before 0.4.9 is vulnerable to directory traversal, allowing attackers to write to arbitrary files via a ../ (dot dot slash) in a Zip archive entry that is mishandled during extraction. This vulnerability is also known as 'Zip-Slip'.
The bug was discovered 04/13/2018. The weakness was released 07/25/2018 (GitHub Repository). The advisory is shared at github.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2018-1002204 since 07/25/2018. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1006 for this issue.
