A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in netpbm up to 10.60. This issue affects the function writeRasterPbm. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a out-of-bounds write vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-787. The product writes data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
An out-of-bounds write vulnerability was found in netpbm before 10.61. A maliciously crafted file could cause the application to crash or possibly allow code execution.
The bug was discovered 02/05/2017. The weakness was disclosed 07/27/2018 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). It is possible to read the advisory at bugzilla.redhat.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2017-2581 since 11/30/2016. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 141 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 101135 (openSUSE Security Update : netpbm (openSUSE-2017-742)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 170069 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for netpbm (SUSE-SU-2017:1575-1)).
Upgrading to version 10.61 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
