Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in netpbm up to 10.60. Affected is some unknown processing of the component SVG File Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:
A null pointer dereference vulnerability was found in netpbm before 10.61. A maliciously crafted SVG file could cause the application to crash.
The bug was discovered 02/05/2017. The weakness was presented 07/27/2018 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared for download at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2017-2586 since 11/30/2016. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 24 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 97484 (Fedora 24 : netpbm (2017-fa4e441e03)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 170173 (OpenSUSE Security Update for netpbm (openSUSE-SU-2017:1698-1)).
Upgrading to version 10.61 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (97484) and SecurityFocus (BID 96708†). See VDB-122269 for similar entry. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
