A vulnerability was found in VideoLAN VLC Media Player up to 2.1.2 (Multimedia Player Software). It has been classified as problematic. The ASF_ReadObject_file_properties function in modules/demux/asf/libasf.c in the ASF Demuxer in VideoLAN VLC Media Player before 2.1.3 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (divide-by-zero error and crash) via a zero minimum and maximum data packet size in an ASF file.
The weakness was presented 02/05/2014 as EDB-ID 31429 as confirmed exploit (Exploit-DB). The advisory is shared for download at exploit-db.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2014-1684 since 01/28/2014. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
A public exploit has been developed by Saif in Python and been published immediately after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 89901 (GLSA-201603-08 : VLC: Multiple vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 122728 (VideoLAN VLC Media Player ".asf" File Denial of Service Vulnerability).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.videolan.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
