Cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in Upload/search.php in MyBB 1.6.12 and earlier allows remote attackers to inject arbitrary web script or HTML via the keywords parameter in a do_search action, which is not properly handled in a forced SQL error message.

The weakness was disclosed 02/03/2014 by Osanda Malith Jayathissa as File 125038 as not defined exploit (Packetstorm). It is possible to read the advisory at packetstormsecurity.com. The vendor was not involved in the public release. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2014-1840 since 02/02/2014. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1059.007 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

A public exploit has been developed by Osanda Malith Jayathissa in HTML/Javascript and been published immediately after the advisory. The exploit is available at packetstormsecurity.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. By approaching the search of inurl:/search.php "MyBB 1.6" it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking.
