A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Internet Explorer 6/7/8/9/10 (Web Browser). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects an unknown function. Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 through 11 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (memory corruption) via a crafted web site, aka "Internet Explorer Memory Corruption Vulnerability," a different vulnerability than CVE-2014-0275 and CVE-2014-0286.
The issue has been introduced in 03/22/2001. The weakness was disclosed 02/11/2014 with Microsoft as MS14-010 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared at technet.microsoft.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2014-0285 since 12/03/2013. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 01/09/2025). It is expected to see the exploit prices for this product decreasing in the near future.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 4709 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 72433 (MS14-010: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (2909921)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. Upgrading to version 11 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch MS14-010 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 13530.
