A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Windows up to Server 2012 (Operating System) and classified as critical. This issue affects some unknown processing of the component Direct2D. The Direct2D implementation in Microsoft Windows 7 SP1, Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1, Windows 8, Windows 8.1, Windows Server 2012 Gold and R2, and Windows RT Gold and 8.1 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a large 2D geometric figure that is encountered with Internet Explorer, aka "Microsoft Graphics Component Memory Corruption Vulnerability."
The weakness was presented 02/11/2014 by Omair with Zero Day Initiative as MS14-007 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). It is possible to read the advisory at technet.microsoft.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2014-0263 since 12/03/2013. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 72430 (MS14-007: Vulnerability in Direct2D Could Allow Remote Code Execution (2912390)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90938 (Microsoft Direct2D Graphics Component Memory Corruption Vulnerability (MS14-007)).
Applying the patch MS14-007 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 13522.
