Microsoft .NET Framework up to 4.5.1 input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Microsoft .NET Framework up to 4.5.1 (Programming Language Software). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Microsoft .NET Framework 1.0 SP3, 1.1 SP1, 2.0 SP2, 3.5, 3.5.1, 4, 4.5, and 4.5.1 does not properly determine whether it is safe to execute a method, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via (1) a crafted web site or (2) a crafted .NET Framework application that exposes a COM server endpoint, aka "Type Traversal Vulnerability."

The weakness was published 02/11/2014 by Metasploit with Microsoft as MS14-009 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared at technet.microsoft.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2014-0257 since 12/03/2013. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

A public exploit has been developed by Metasploit in Ruby and been published 5 months after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as highly functional. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 72432 (MS14-009: Vulnerabilities in .NET Framework Could Allow Privilege Escalation (2916607)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90943 (Microsoft .NET Framework Elevation of Privileges and Denial of Service Vulnerabilities (MS14-009)).

Applying the patch MS14-009 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (90788), Exploit-DB (33892), Tenable (72432), SecurityFocus (BID 65417†) and OSVDB (103163†). Additional details are provided at zdnet.com. Similar entries are available at VDB-12238, VDB-12239, VDB-12240 and VDB-12241.
