Details
A vulnerability has been found in Microsoft .NET Framework up to 4.5.1 (Programming Language Software) and classified as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown function of the component HTTP POST Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:
Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 SP1, 2.0 SP2, 3.5, 3.5.1, 4, 4.5, and 4.5.1 does not properly determine TCP connection states, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (ASP.NET daemon hang) via crafted HTTP requests that trigger persistent resource consumption for a (1) stale or (2) closed connection, as exploited in the wild in February 2014, aka "POST Request DoS Vulnerability."
The weakness was released 02/11/2014 with Microsoft as MS14-009 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). It is possible to read the advisory at technet.microsoft.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2014-0253 since 12/03/2013. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 72432 (MS14-009: Vulnerabilities in .NET Framework Could Allow Privilege Escalation (2916607)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90943 (Microsoft .NET Framework Elevation of Privileges and Denial of Service Vulnerabilities (MS14-009)).
