Details
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Apple macOS up to 10.12/11.3 (Operating System). This affects some unknown functionality of the component Bluetooth Driver. The manipulation as part of a Parameter leads to a cryptographic issue vulnerability (Key). CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-310. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Bluetooth firmware or operating system software drivers in macOS versions before 10.13, High Sierra and iOS versions before 11.4, and Android versions before the 2018-06-05 patch may not sufficiently validate elliptic curve parameters used to generate public keys during a Diffie-Hellman key exchange, which may allow a remote attacker to obtain the encryption key used by the device.
The bug was discovered 03/14/2019. The weakness was presented 08/07/2018 as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is shared at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2018-5383 since 01/11/2018. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1600 for this issue.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 117588 (Apple TV < 12 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Misc. and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 371061 (Apple macOS High Sierra 10.13.6, Security Update 2018-004 Sierra, Security Update 2018-004 El Capitan Not Installed (HT208937)).
Upgrading to version 10.13 or 11.4 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 3 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
