A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in cPanel 11.36.2.9/11.38.2.12/11.40.0.28/11.40.1.2 (Hosting Control Software). This affects an unknown functionality of the component Account Creation Handler. The manipulation as part of a Ruby Code leads to a privileges management vulnerability. A flaw in the new account creation process resulted in the Ruby ‘gem’ command running with the effective UID of the newly created user and the real UID of root. A malicious reseller account could leverage this flaw to execute arbitrary Ruby code with root’s UID during the account creation process.
Upgrading to version 11.38.2.16, 11.40.1.10 or 11.42.0.4 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
