Xen up to 4.11.x ARM Grant Table v2 BUG Hypercall resource consumption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Xen up to 4.11.x (Virtualization Software) and classified as problematic. Affected by this issue is the function BUG of the component ARM Grant Table v2 Handler. The manipulation as part of a Hypercall leads to a resource consumption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-400. The product does not properly control the allocation and maintenance of a limited resource, thereby enabling an actor to influence the amount of resources consumed, eventually leading to the exhaustion of available resources. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:

An issue was discovered in Xen through 4.11.x. ARM never properly implemented grant table v2, either in the hypervisor or in Linux. Unfortunately, an ARM guest can still request v2 grant tables; they will simply not be properly set up, resulting in subsequent grant-related hypercalls hitting BUG() checks. An unprivileged guest can cause a BUG() check in the hypervisor, resulting in a denial-of-service (crash).

The bug was discovered 08/14/2018. The weakness was presented 08/17/2018 by Jann Horn with Google Project Zero (Website). The advisory is shared for download at xenbits.xen.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2018-15469 since 08/17/2018. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 112156 (Xen Project ARM Grant Table v2 DoS (XSA-268)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Misc. and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 171690 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for xen (SUSE-SU-2018:3490-1)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (112156) and SecurityFocus (BID 103174†). See VDB-113918, VDB-117441, VDB-117508 and VDB-122910 for similar entries. VulDB is the best source for vulnerability data and more expert information about this specific topic.
