Summary
A vulnerability described as problematic has been identified in Linux Kernel. Affected is the function snd_rawmidi_input_params of the file rawmidi.c of the component MIDI Kernel Driver. Executing a manipulation can lead to double free.
This vulnerability is registered as CVE-2018-10902. The attack needs to be launched locally. No exploit is available.
Upgrading the affected component is recommended.
Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel (Operating System) (unknown version). It has been declared as problematic. This vulnerability affects the function snd_rawmidi_input_params of the file rawmidi.c of the component MIDI Kernel Driver. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a double free vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-415. The product calls free() twice on the same memory address, potentially leading to modification of unexpected memory locations. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
It was found that the raw midi kernel driver does not protect against concurrent access which leads to a double realloc (double free) in snd_rawmidi_input_params() and snd_rawmidi_output_status() which are part of snd_rawmidi_ioctl() handler in rawmidi.c file. A malicious local attacker could possibly use this for privilege escalation.
The bug was discovered 08/21/2018. The weakness was published 08/21/2018 with Zero Day Initiative as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared for download at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2018-10902 since 05/09/2018. The attack needs to be approached locally. The requirement for exploitation is a single authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 117523 (openSUSE Security Update : the Linux Kernel (openSUSE-2018-1016)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 157849 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Security Update for kernel (ELSA-2018-3083)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 4 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
