A vulnerability has been found in Samba up to 4.7.8/4.8.3 (File Transfer Software) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown code block of the component NTLMv1 Authentication. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a credentials management vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-255. A flaw was found in the way samba before 4.7.9 and 4.8.4 allowed the use of weak NTLMv1 authentication even when NTLMv1 was explicitly disabled. A man-in-the-middle attacker could use this flaw to read the credential and other details passed between the samba server and client.
The bug was discovered 08/14/2018. The weakness was disclosed 08/22/2018 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is available at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2018-1139 since 12/03/2017. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1552 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 8 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. Upgrading to version 4.7.9 or 4.8.4 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 hours after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
