Wireshark up to 2.6.2 Bluetooth AVDTP Dissector packet-btavdtp.c Packet injection

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability identified as problematic has been detected in Wireshark. This affects an unknown part of the file epan/dissectors/packet-btavdtp.c of the component Bluetooth AVDTP Dissector. This manipulation as part of Packet causes injection. This vulnerability appears as CVE-2018-16058. The attack may be initiated remotely. There is no available exploit. You should upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Wireshark (Packet Analyzer Software). It has been declared as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown functionality of the file epan/dissectors/packet-btavdtp.c of the component Bluetooth AVDTP Dissector. The manipulation as part of a Packet leads to a injection vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-74. The product constructs all or part of a command, data structure, or record using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify how it is parsed or interpreted when it is sent to a downstream component. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:

In Wireshark 2.6.0 to 2.6.2, 2.4.0 to 2.4.8, and 2.2.0 to 2.2.16, the Bluetooth AVDTP dissector could crash. This was addressed in epan/dissectors/packet-btavdtp.c by properly initializing a data structure.

The bug was discovered 08/29/2018. The weakness was presented 08/30/2018 (Website). The advisory is shared at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2018-16058 since 08/28/2018. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1055 for this issue.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 117821 (SUSE SLED12 / SLES12 Security Update : wireshark (SUSE-SU-2018:2891-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 171545 (OpenSUSE Security Update for wireshark (openSUSE-SU-2018:2587-1)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
