Details
A vulnerability was found in Wireshark (Packet Analyzer Software). It has been declared as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown functionality of the file epan/dissectors/packet-btavdtp.c of the component Bluetooth AVDTP Dissector. The manipulation as part of a Packet leads to a injection vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-74. The product constructs all or part of a command, data structure, or record using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify how it is parsed or interpreted when it is sent to a downstream component. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:
In Wireshark 2.6.0 to 2.6.2, 2.4.0 to 2.4.8, and 2.2.0 to 2.2.16, the Bluetooth AVDTP dissector could crash. This was addressed in epan/dissectors/packet-btavdtp.c by properly initializing a data structure.
The bug was discovered 08/29/2018. The weakness was presented 08/30/2018 (Website). The advisory is shared at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2018-16058 since 08/28/2018. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
