A vulnerability was found in elfutils 0.173. It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects the function dwarf_getabbrev of the file dwarf_getabbrev.c of the component libdw. libdw in elfutils 0.173 checks the end of the attributes list incorrectly in dwarf_getabbrev in dwarf_getabbrev.c and dwarf_hasattr in dwarf_hasattr.c, leading to a heap-based buffer over-read and an application crash.
The bug was discovered 09/04/2018. The weakness was disclosed 09/03/2018 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at sourceware.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2018-16403 since 09/03/2018. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
