Details
A vulnerability classified as critical was found in elfutils (affected version unknown). Affected by this vulnerability is the function dwarf_getaranges of the file dwarf_getaranges.c of the component libdw. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. dwarf_getaranges in dwarf_getaranges.c in libdw in elfutils before 2018-08-18 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (heap-based buffer over-read) via a crafted file.
The bug was discovered 08/17/2017. The weakness was published 08/29/2018 by Agostino Sarubbo with Gentoo (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at sourceware.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2018-16062 since 08/28/2018. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
