A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in elfutils 0.168. Affected by this issue is the function check_symtab_shndx of the file elflint.c of the component ELF File Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The check_symtab_shndx function in elflint.c in elfutils 0.168 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (heap-based buffer over-read and application crash) via a crafted ELF file.
The bug was discovered 04/03/2017. The weakness was published 04/09/2017 by Agostino Sarubbo with Gentoo (Website). The advisory is available at blogs.gentoo.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2017-7611 since 04/09/2017. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation.
