A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in elfutils 0.168. This affects the function check_sysv_hash of the file elflint.c of the component ELF File Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The check_sysv_hash function in elflint.c in elfutils 0.168 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (heap-based buffer over-read and application crash) via a crafted ELF file.
The bug was discovered 04/03/2017. The weakness was released 04/09/2017 by Agostino Sarubbo with Gentoo (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at blogs.gentoo.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2017-7612 since 04/09/2017. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation.
