Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in glusterfs Server (affected version not known). This affects some unknown functionality of the component debug io-stats Translator. The manipulation of the argument trusted.io-stats-dump as part of a Attribute leads to a untrusted search path vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-426. The product searches for critical resources using an externally-supplied search path that can point to resources that are not under the product's direct control. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
It was found that glusterfs server does not properly sanitize file paths in the "trusted.io-stats-dump" extended attribute which is used by the "debug/io-stats" translator. Attacker can use this flaw to create files and execute arbitrary code. To exploit this attacker would require sufficient access to modify the extended attributes of files on a gluster volume.
The bug was discovered 02/03/2018. The weakness was presented 09/04/2018 by Michael Hanselmann as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2018-10904 since 05/09/2018. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. A authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1574 for this issue.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 213 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 117317 (RHEL 7 : Gluster Storage (RHSA-2018:2607)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Red Hat Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 256518 (CentOS Security Update for glusterfs (CESA-2018:2607)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 5 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
